The Great Outdoors

To my sweet friends,

It’s time for your September update!

Just a few more big steps before the commercial kitchen is up and running! As with all construction projects, there have been surprises and delays along the way, and we’re working through them as they come.

On a personal note, you may find our current living situation interesting. A week ago, we moved into the 400 square foot kitchen space (don’t worry, I’m not baking in there!) and we are currently without indoor plumbing or gas. Soooo, we’ve been making the best of our glorified camping situation by taking plenty of outdoor showers and cooking dinner on the grill. Although it sounds pretty unpleasant, it’s certainly worth the sacrifice to see this construction project to the end. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be making yet another living transition into this beauty:

It’s a 1970 Airstream Ambassador. Pretty cool, huh? And just in time for the cool weather to roll in.

More updates to come!

Enjoy this lovely weather.

Getting In The (Construction) Zone!

Come on in!

Just like that, July is a memory and we’re already working our way through August. My, how times flies when you’re having fun! Lucky for me, I came home to Austin just in time to see plenty of progress. The commercial kitchen is well on its way to completion: the dry wall has been hung, the electricity has been wired, the plumbing has been plumbed! Here are some pictures to satisfy your curiosity!

Once the kitchen is finished, I’ll be taking the next couple of months to test the workability of the space and work out any kinks that may arise. So order away! And as always, thank you so much for your patience and support!

dry wall! tables! ladders!

Sinks full of more sinks and pipes!

Hot *and* cold water!

Off to the Red, White, and Blue Yonder!

Hi folks!

What a great day! Today is not only the 4th of July, but it’s also the day I leave for Chicago! For those who don’t know, I’m studying improv at the famous iO Theatre for the next 5 weeks.

I’ll be back in action shortly after I return, but until then, I leave you with the image of the red, white, and blue breakfast I made this morning: A slice of tomato pie, the perfect over-medium egg, and a handful of fresh blueberries.

Bye-bye for now,

Karen Jane

Summer Growth and Migration

Hi guys!

I just wanted to give everyone an update on what is going on in the world of Scissortail Savories and Sweets.

First, I want to say thank you to all my awesome customers who have kept this operation alive over the past five months. It’s hard to believe that I’ve only been in business for five months, but it also feels like just yesterday that I decided to take the plunge and put something amazing into the world. I can’t thank you enough for being a part of it.

So, what is in store for the future?

Right now I am building a commercial kitchen that will be my base of operations going forward. It’s next door to the house my husband and I just bought, which is also under construction. Given how much work is left to be done and how long the permitting process takes, I can only guess at when Scissortail will be fully up-and-running, but I will be optimistic and say this September.

Having a commercial kitchen will allow me to not only to provide you with more consistent, efficiently-created products, but also to supply retailers (coffee shops, restaurants, etc.) with my pies and such, so more people can experience this thing that I love so much. I’ll also be implementing a quick and reliable delivery system so you can get your pastries with as little inconvenience as possible. I appreciate all your patience while I figure things out!

This is the way we found it...

In the mean time, while not swinging a hammer and getting stung by scorpions at the new place (ouch!), I’ll be spreading my wings by traveling and catching up with friends and family. It’s sort of like that backpacking trip you’re supposed to take between high school and college…. you do some stuff you’ve never done and see some places you’ve never seen and come back with a fresh perspective.

As part of my travels, I’ll be staying in Chicago for five weeks studying Chicago-style improv at the iO Theatre. I can’t tell you how excited I am to see improv in a whole new light! And see a Cubs game at Wrigley Field! And live next to Lake Michigan! And use public transportation! And spend part of the summer away from the blazing Texas sun!

All of this, of course, means I won’t be taking orders for a while. But over the next few months, I’ll be sharing the progress we’ve made with blog posts and pictures here and on the Scissortail Facebook page. So keep checking back! Your support and encouragement really goes a long way!

Here’s to the future!

All the best,

Karen Jane DeWitt

Spring is in the air, and around my house that means an abundance of fresh basil! I can’t help putting it in everything, including my dessert. That’s how I created this delicious, aromatic lemon basil cake. Topped with cream cheese icing, it has an almost savory flavor. Have I eaten it for breakfast with my coffee? Yes. Have I enjoyed it with a glass of chilled white wine? Yep. Is it my favorite cake ever? Yes! You have to try it!

Fresh and tangy! Lemon cream pie is an old favorite that will have the family walking down memory lane together this Easter. My flakey, buttery crust is first filled with smooth lemon custard, then it’s topped with fresh, lightly sweetened whipped cream. Mmm-mmm!
